The Vanguard.

First over the wall, and followed.

Goes first over the wall and is followed: bold enough to take the hill, magnetic enough to bring people.

  • Magnetic
  • bold
  • impatient
Start the test…and the watch-outs stay with whoever earned this read.

At its best

Takes the first risk and makes it look followable: others move because you already did.

  • Decides fast when others stall
  • Comfortable with pressure and confrontation
  • Turns ambition into concrete action

What it gives a room

Goes first. This is the seat that takes the risk in public, which is what makes a cautious room willing to follow at all.

What to hand it

The launch nobody wants to own, and a named check two weeks in to see who is genuinely still with it.

Working with The Vanguard.

Do

  • Be direct: lead with the point
  • Bring options, not open-ended problems
  • Challenge them with evidence, not emotion
  • Lead with the bottom line
  • Bring decisions, not updates

Don't

  • Don't bury the ask in context
  • Don't take directness personally
  • Don't book meetings that could be messages

What motivates

  • Ownership of outcomes
  • A scoreboard worth winning
  • Authority to move without asking

What drains

  • Consensus loops
  • Micromanagement
  • Slow-moving rooms

Where it thrives

  • Founder / GM tracks
  • Sales leadership
  • Turnarounds & new markets
  • High-pressure operating roles

Leading

You set the pace by example. That suits people who run on stretch and can leave people who run on stability working at a tempo they would not have chosen. Both kinds of people are usually in the room. Challenge is your default motivator, so you tend to offer it to everyone, including the people who finish what you start. Name the standard, then let them meet it their own way: the pace you set is also the pace you are teaching.

Relating

You tend to show care by doing: fixing the thing, paying for it, standing between the people you love and whatever is coming. It is real care, and it can be hard to see from the outside. Worth asking the people closest to you directly: would they trade some of the fixing for an evening where nothing is being solved? Many people with this pattern find the answer is not the one they expected. Saying it is also doing something.
